WEC NEWS: Ben Henderson and Anthony Pettis signed on for December 16 Lightweight Title fight

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

WEC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson's first Lightweight Championship fight with someone other than Jamie Varner or Donald Cerrone is set, as Anthony Pettis will get his first title shot on December 16 in Arizona.

The bout has been signed, according to MMAWeekly.com, and will headline the WEC's first trip to Arizona, which will air live on Versus.

Henderson has not fought since defeating Donald Cerrone a second time in April at WEC 48. Pettis earned his title shot with a highly impressive victory over Shane Roller at WEC 50 last month. The Duke Roufus product out of Milwaukee submitted Roller late in the fight.

Penick's Analysis: Pettis is a worthy challenger, though this fight may be coming slightly too soon. While his takedown defense looked great against Roller, it's going to be a whole other test against Henderson here. I thought perhaps a win by Jamie Varner at WEC 51 next week would put him in that slot and they'd give Pettis one more fight, but I still like seeing him get an opportunity. He's been very exciting so far in the WEC, and this fight will be another really exciting main event for the WEC.
