November's UFC 122 event in Germany has taken on a new significance with the news that Chael Sonnen failed his UFC 117 drug test for performance enhancers, as the UFC announced today that the winner of the main event between Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami will face off against Anderson Silva in 2011 for the UFC Middleweight Championship.
Today's official announcement of the event revealed the number one contender status of the main event.
The card is the UFC's return to Germany for the second time. The event takes place on November 13 from the Knig-Pilsener-Arena in Oberhausen. It will air via tape delay in the U.S. on Spike TV.
"We are glad to be coming back to Germany with UFC 122 and to reward our loyal UFC fans in Germany," said UFC Managing Director of International Development Marshall Zelaznik. "Both Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami are one win away from a shot at the UFC Middleweight Title and are coming to Germany with a great deal to win and lose.
"This is a sporting event with tremendous international significance, and we are delighted to have been able to bring this event to Oberhausen."
Penick's Analysis: Well, the UFC appears to be canceling Sonnen's title shot officially, and the winner of this fight will likely have a quick turnaround, probably to fight on the Super Bowl weekend card. It's great for both Belfort and Okami, who likely would have gotten the next shot after Sonnen, but now they'll move right to the front of the line with a win.
