Shane Carwin tweeted earlier today that he didn't have an opponent for UFC 125 but was expecting to fight on the New Year's Day card. However, according to multiple published reports, the organization is targeting a fight between him and Ultimate Fighter season ten winner Roy Nelson.
Nelson is coming off his first loss in the organization, a three round decision to Junior Dos Santos at UFC 117. That loss snapped his two fight win streak in the organization, both knockout victories over Brendan Schaub and Stefan Struve.
Carwin will be looking to bounce back from his first career loss. He came up short against UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 in July.
UFC 125 will take place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on January 1, 2011.
Penick's Analysis: This fight made complete sense. Nelson is the most logical opponent available for Carwin at this point with a number of other fighters already booked in fights for upcoming events. This is a very good heavyweight fight, and with the Lightweight Championship being defended on this card it makes for a good co-main event with two very recognized names in Carwin and Nelson.
