MARSH: Where does Bellator Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard stand in the middleweight division?

By: Griffin Marsh, MMATorch Contributor

As most MMA fans know, Hector Lombard is the Bellator Middleweight Champion who has been riding a wave of destruction while piling up an impressive 15 fight win streak. Lombard has, for the most part, dominated his fellow competitors in the Bellator organization. He has compiled an impressive (27-2-1) record in MMA, with most of the wins coming by way of Knockout (15) or submission (6). Lombard is a decorated Judo champion who has won various Judo titles in Cuba, Australia and many other countries around the world. He holds the rank of 4th degree blackbelt in Judo and also holds a blackbelt in Brazilian Jiujitsu.

Without a doubt Lombard is an intimidating presence in the cage on looks alone, but along with his prominent grappling credentials, he possesses a solid striking game and explosive power in his hands. Some of his knockouts are as nasty as it gets. Since joining the Bellator roster he has compiled a record of 8-0, five of those coming in the Bellator cage, and has taken no prisoners along the way. With Alexander Shlemenko scheduled to be his next opponent at Bellator 34, he?s more than likely going to make it six wins in the organization. With so many in the MMA world watching Lombard, the question of ?why isn?t Hector Lombard a top 10 Middleweight?? keeps surfacing.

Hector Lombard undoubtedly is a talented fighter, to say the least. As I mentioned before he possesses a good ground game, solid striking and dynamite in his hands. So why isn?t Lombard receiving more attention for his accomplishments? I feel the answer lies with the competition he has faced and continues to face in Bellator and elsewhere. While a 27-2-1 record, with 21 of the 27 wins coming by way of KO or submission is no doubt impressive, it doesn?t seem so impressive when you take a look at the competition he has faced. When I look at Hector Lombard's 30 professional fights, two names stick out to me as solid opponents. Those two men are Gegard Mousasi and Akihiro Gono, and in both of those fights he lost.

Does Hector Lombard deserve to be a top 10 middleweight? Based upon the level of competition he?s faced, my opinion is not yet. That's not to say he can't get there, just not yet. When Hector Lombard?s contract with Bellator comes to a close, my guess is that Dana White will do all he can to employ him. He is the exact fighter Dana White loves because he brings his A game every fight, he finishes fights (I'm looking at you Jon Fitch) and he has no problems doing so in brutal fashion.

Hector Lombard control?s his own destiny. In my opinion, the best thing he can do is to finish out his obligations with Bellator and hire a good manager that will get him into the UFC. Once in the UFC, we will see exactly where he stands and if he does belong as a top middleweight.
