UFC NEWS: Forrest Griffin vs. Rich Franklin in the works for UFC 127 on Super Bowl weekend

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Two former UFC Champions will square off in light heavyweight competition on February 5, 2011, as Forrest Griffin and Rich Franklin will meet at UFC 127, according to a report from MMAFighting.com.

Both fighters are currently on the sidelines rehabbing injuries which required surgery earlier this year, but both were expected to be healed before the year was out.

Griffin has not fought since a decision victory over Tito Ortiz at UFC 106 in November of 2009. The former Light Heavyweight Champion and original Ultimate Fighter winner was set to return against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in May, but a shoulder injury forced him to pull out of the fight.

Franklin, meanwhile, had his forearm broken in June in the first round of his fight with Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 in Vancouver. Despite the injury, Franklin continued on and knocked Liddell out with his non-broken arm before the first round ended. He auctioned his initial cast off for charity earlier this summer, and was expecting a recovery and return around the beginning of the year.

UFC 127 is expected to take place in Las Vegas and feature the UFC Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort.

Penick's Analysis: This is a huge fight in the light heavyweight division, and one I wanted to see as soon as Franklin knocked Liddell out in June. Dana White had made a comment leading into that fight that the winner would face Forrest, and with both coming off of lengthy layoffs due to injury it's a perfect matchup. The winner of this fight can make a move up the ranks towards one more Championship opportunity, but a loss won't be the end for either. This is a great fight and another big addition to the Super Bowl weekend card.
