Chael Sonnen's solo build up to his UFC 117 fight with Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight Championship proved to be a massive success for the UFC.
Following up on UFC 116's pay-per-view success - the Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin headlining fight drew around 1.1 million buys - early estimates for UFC 117 have it coming in near a million itself.
Those early estimates were first reported by Bryan Alvarez at F4WOnline.com, and would bring this event just under May's UFC 114 card with the Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson main event.
If the numbers wind up falling anywhere near that number it will be considered a hugely successful event. It will be the biggest buyrate an Anderson Silva headlining event will have garnered, and continues the trend of success for events that follow a Lesnar headlined card.

Penick's Analysis: This is a remarkable number for this card. I was expecting Sonnen's pre-fight talking to boost the buyrate slightly, but with what had happened in Silva's previous fights, to consider this a reachable number heading in would have been crazy. It's a testament to how well Sonnen was able to gain interest in fans for this fight, and he deserves a bonus from the UFC for his efforts. The other great part about this is the fact that so many people go to see this fight. It was one of the single best fights I've ever seen, and perhaps the greatest title fight in UFC history. Having that type of historical bout be such a success is an even greater mark in the UFC's favor right now. This unprecedented string of business for the organization is incredible.
