Sounds like Strikeforce has some doubts about Bobby Lashley
expectations from all these people," Coker told host Luke Thomas. "People think he should be right in
there with Fedor. I mean come on, let's be real, he's not at that level
right now." The PW Torch reported on what forced Lashley to the hospital after the fight.Lashley was said to be "extremely dehydrated" after his fight against Chad
Griggs on the "Showtime: Houston" fight card. At the hospital, Lashley was
treated with multiple IV bags to pump fluids back into his system.Coker said he still believes Lashley would continue his MMA career but was non-committal on a fight against fellow pro wrestler Dave Batista. Coker said on MMA Nation that Lashley had already reached out to Strikeforce and wants to fight immediately.

AMADI: Randy Couture vs. James Toney at UFC 118 not the "freak show" fight it's being made out to be
For whatever reason, the UFC 118 co-main event featuring Randy Couture vs. James Toney is being discussed as if it were Randy Couture vs. congenital amputee Kyle Maynard. Despite James Toney having more knockout victories in boxing than Randy Couture has fights period, many seem to be of the opinion that this fight is beneath the UFC and is a sort of ?freak show.? While this fight is a fairly obvious mismatch, it is no ?freak show.?
Freak show fights are fights like Fedor Emelianenko vs. Zuluzinho, Hong Man Choi vs. Fedor Emelianenko, Hong Man Choi vs. Jose Canseco, or the ?Battle of the WWE stars? fight that Strikeforce is trying to cook up between Bobby Lashley and Dave Bautista. That fight particularly pits an elite wrestler with six MMA bouts to his credit against a man with no athletic background, no combat sports experience, and who in terms of MMA qualifications is no different from any muscle bound man off the streets.
By MMA standards, James Toney vs. Randy Couture is a mismatch of the worst kind, but not a freak show. In what way is James Toney vs. Randy Couture really all that much different from Josh Koscheck vs. Paul Daley, or Georges St. Pierre vs. Dan Hardy? Essentially those matchups were top notch wrestlers against strikers with lackluster takedown defense who weren?t particularly adept at submissions. The selling point of each fight was the possibility that one punch could be landed before they were taken down by their superior grapplers -- sounds pretty familiar.
It isn?t as if Randy Couture is even the worst stylistic matchup for Toney in the UFC. Couture is a Greco-Roman wrestler, meaning he is more proficient at upper body takedowns and utilizing the clinch than he is proficient at the double leg takedown. If Couture looks to his bread and butter, it could put him in punching range for an incredibly dangerous puncher.
Another point of interest is that Randy Couture?s chin just isn?t what it used to be. Couture has been dropped in almost every single fight he?s had since his return from a year long hiatus with the UFC. Brock Lesnar finished him with strikes, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira dropped him multiple times with punches, and seemingly whenever Brandon Vera wasn?t pressed up against the cage everything he threw at Couture sent him to the canvas.
Couture doesn?t need the world?s greatest chin or even double leg takedown to put James Toney on his back, and he doesn?t even have to respect Toney?s takedown defense long enough to strike with the IBA heavyweight champion; but the potential for Toney to land a big a shot and put Couture out is still great. The intrigue of this fight comes down to Couture?s ability to close the distance versus Toney?s ability to land a solid shot on Couture as he comes in on him. For those few seconds, James Toney?s chances of winning go up from zero to about 50/50.

UFC NEWS: Jorge Rivera vs. Alessio Sakara now coming to UFC 122 in Germany
Jorge Rivera was originally looking to fight Alessio Sakara in front of a hometown crowd this weekend at UFC 118 in Boston, Mass., but injuries pulled both fighters from the card. Now, according to a report from the Boston Herald, both fighters are once again getting matched up.
But the fight is coming much further from home for Rivera, as the fight will now happen at UFC 122 in Germany this November.
Rivera is riding a three fight win streak, including his most recent knockout victory over Nate Quarry at Fight Night 21 in March.
Sakara as well is riding a win streak of his own, most recently defeating James Irvin in March.
UFC 122 will air via tape delay in the U.S. on Spike TV on November 13. The event takes place from Oberhausen, Germany.
Link to Original Source Article
Penick's Analysis: When Sakara pulled out earlier this month it made sense to try to get this one back together when it was their original plan. Both will have been out of action for eight months himself. Ring rust could play into both fighters' performances in this one. Still, it's a very good matchup with both fighters riding a nice win streak, and it will be a good one for the Spike TV card.
UPDATE: The original article mistakenly stated that Sakara had been out since last August. It has been corrected.
Strikeforce Houston: KJ Noons Knocks Out Jorge Gurgel
KJ Noons knocked out Jorge Gurgel in the second round of Saturday night's Strikeforce Houston card with the help of two illegal strikes, one a left hook at the end of the first round and one an illegal knee on the ground as the referee was starting to stop the fight in the second. The referee awarded the fight to Noons by knockout even though it easily could have gone to Gurgel by disqualification.
At the end of the first round, Noons floored Gurgel with a huge left hook an instant after the bell rang, and Gurgel was wobbly as he tried to get back to his corner. The punch clearly landed after the round had ended, and the referee easily could have disqualified Noons, or at least taken a point away. Instead, the referee did nothing.

UFC 118 Post-Fight Press Conference
Wow! We had a few pick-ems and a few surprises tonight at UFC 118, but overall it was a great card.
BJ didn't have an answer for "The Answer" and Couture had a simple, yet effective one for "Lights Out," namely, take him down and expose his weaknesses on the ground.
Love him or hate him, Gray Maynard proved he is the number one lightweight contender and we might just see him walk away from his next bout wearing UFC gold.
Anyone who didn't like this card is either a boxing fan or a BJ Penn fan.
Here's the post-fight press conference after the jump.

Davis on boxing in MMA: Toney has little shot and Noons not a UFC fighter
fighting - kicking, punching, trapping, grappling and ground fighting. Those are five different ways a fight can be fought at and all Randy
has to do is shutdown the punching range. That's it! And that's easy
to do especially for somebody when this is all that they ever do." Davis knows first hand what it's like to bring so few weapons to the Octagon. It was so bad for him on TUF 2 and then the TUF 2 Finale, he was close to walking away from the sport. And that was against MMA prospects. Toney is facing a 13-year veteran of the sport. "His first professional MMA fight, his first one, is going to be against one of the greats," said Davis. "That's like me just jumping into professional basketball and playing a game of one-on-one against Michael Jordan. It's just not gonna happen."That's a bit of an exaggeration but you get the point. Toney has also talked about facing Brock Lesnar if he wins on Saturday night and says that he's still balancing a boxing career. Davis said that's not possible. Then host Mauro Ranallo threw out Strikeforce fighter K.J. Noons as an example. Noons (10-2 MMA) has also boxed professionally 13 times. Davis wasn't impressed. "If he came to the UFC in the 155-pound division, he would be eaten up and spit out. He wouldn't make it here," said Davis. "He wouldn't be able to come in here and box and fight MMA, wouldn't happen."Aside from pro boxing careers, Davis and Toney share one other thing in common, they both celebrated a birthday on Tuesday. Davis, 37 said he expects a better birthday gift on Saturday night than Toney, 42, will be getting.

WEC NEWS: Phoenix gets WEC 54 by winning "Hometown Takedown" contest; Henderson likely for the card
The WEC and AMP Energy teamed up this summer to run the "Hometown Takedown" contest, giving 30 cities the chance to vote and bring a WEC event to their city this December.
On Wednesday's broadcast of WEC 50 on Versus, the organization announced the top three vote-getting cities in the contest before ultimately revealing the winner. The top three cities were Milwaukee, Nashville and Phoenix.
UFC President Dana White then revealed before the main event that Phoenix, Arizona was the winner of the contest. The city will receive the WEC 54 event on Thursday, December 16 at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Ariz., just outside of Phoenix.
The card will likely be headlined by WEC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson in his second title defense, as he lives and trains in the state. Who that fight will come against may not be determined until after next month's WEC 51 event, where Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone square off for a second time.
Henderson defeated Varner for the Title in January, but Varner could earn his rematch with a win over Cerrone. If he's not a viable option, both Anthony Pettis and Bart Palaszewski made their case for a title shot with victories at WEC 50 on Wednesday.
Penick's Analysis: If Varner beats Cerrone I think he'll likely get the rematch, in which case the WEC should book a rematch between Pettis and Palaszewski as well to determine the next challenger to the title. Pettis dropped a split decision to Palaszewski in their first meeting last December, but he's come a long way in eight months since that fight, winning three straight himself. He looked excellent against Shane Roller, and if he can beat Palaszewski in a rematch he would absolutely earn a title shot in 2011.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal out at least nine months; undergoing knee surgery next week
It's going to take some time for now former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal to climb back up the ladder, as Sherdog.com reports that the former NCAA D-1 wrestling champion will undergo knee surgery to replace both the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee.
The injury will keep him out of action for at least nine months, according to his manager Ryan Parsons.
Lawal was knocked out by Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante last Saturday night at Strikeforce: Houston in the third round. The injury occurred at some point during the fight, and Lawal will have surgery next Tuesday.
Lawal has had ACL surgery before, most recently after tearing it in March of 2009 in a Sengoku bout against Ryo Kawamura.
Link to Original Source Article
Penick's Analysis: This is not good news for Lawal. It's something they wanted to take care of before it got worse, but at the same time knee injuries have proven to be the bane of many wrestler's existence in MMA. Lawal is already 29 years old, and his continued progression in the sport could be stifled by lengthy injuries like this, especially to his knees. If his shot gets affected by bad knees it takes away one of his biggest weapons. Hopefully he recovers well and gets back to the drawing board and learns from his loss to Feijao.

UFC QUOTABLES: Frank Mir doesn't think Mirko Cro Cop has lost a step; talks gameplan for UFC 119 fight
"I don't know if he's ever really lost his step. I just think the fighters now in the UFC are just a little bit more aggressive than the fighters in PRIDE. Studying game on him, I noticed that guys that back away from him and give him that respect, it seems like they get unleashed on a little harder than the guys that come forward... I think Cro Cop has a good sprawl, he has a good double underhooks. I think if I were to try to just drop and shoot on him, he would stop my shot. I think standing up with him is actually the route to go at first and then eventually when you work in the clinch, going to the ground is obviously a lot easier to do with him than Nogueira."
-Frank Mir talks to Ariel Helwani on MMAFighting.com's "The MMA Hour" about his new UFC 119 opponent in Mirko Cro Cop.
Penick's Analysis: Mir standing with Cro Cop too long could be a very dangerous route for him to go in this fight, but should he successfully close the distance and get into the clinch, that will be his best shot at bringing the fight to the ground. Once it gets there, Mir should be heavily favored to finish from there. This is an extremely tough fight for Cro Cop, especially on five weeks' notice. How he comes into the fight and how Mir tries to go about getting this fight to his world will be the story heading in. It should still be a very interesting heavyweight fight.

UFC NEWS: UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste to pose in Playboy magazine
UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste will grace the cover of the "Playboy" magazine this fall, UFC President Dana White revealed on Wednesday.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com, White confirmed rumors that began when Celeste Tweeted a picture of the Playboy offices earlier this month.
Celeste has already completed her film shoot, according to White, and she will be on the cover of the November edition of the magazine. She now joins Rachelle Leah, the former UFC ring girl who posed for the magazine in 2008.
Penick's Analysis: This is another move where the UFC has followed WWE's model in some fashion for the company. The WWE had a number of their female "wrestlers" pose for the men's magazine throughout the last 13-14 years, and now Celeste, in joining Leah, helps start a trend for the UFC. It's not a bad move, and for Celeste it gives her more exposure, figuratively and literally. She's certainly taking advantage of her spot as the UFC's "main" ring girl at the moment, and she'll be able to keep her affiliation with the organization for some time because of it.

FIGHT ONE: Artenas Young def. Chad Cook via unanimous decision - Uneventful first round. Flurry from Young in the second round, with Cook hitting the ground repeatedly, drawing boos. Cook didn't want to stand up fight. Cook mainly looked like a cat tentatively pawing at a ball of yarn for three rounds. Artenas barely broke a sweat with Cook.
FIGHT TWO: Chad "Robo" Robichaux def. Humberto DeLeon via split decision - Very competitive first round. More action than all three rounds of the first fight (thanks, Chad Cook). Another very competitive second round. Tension in the building was high in the third round as they had another competitive round. DeLeon had the best chance to win it in the first round, but didn't capitalize on an opening. It ultimately cost him the fight.
FIGHT THREE: Reynaldo "The Truth" Trujillo def. Jose Santibanez via referee stoppage at :30 of the first round. Trujillo caught Santibanez with an early uppercut, knocking him down. He followed up with rights and lefts until the ref stopped the fight. Santibanez was no match here. He came walking by the media section with a "deer in the headlights" look after taking the quick loss.
FIGHT FOUR: Adam Schnidler def. Kier Gooch via submission (rear naked choke) in the first round. It's worth noting Gooch came in with a 1-6 record. While standing, Schindler worked his way onto Gooch's back with a rear naked choke, then he emphatically dropped him to the mat and got the tap-out victory. Make it 1-7.
FIGHT FIVE: Vinicus "Draculino" Magalhaes def. Rocky Long via unanimous decision. Rocky Long had 44 MMA fights coming in. Magalhaes, who appears to be about 40-years-old with gray hair, had two fights coming in, but he apparently sold tickets, as there was a loud contingent for him. Very competitive first round, then absolutely nothing happened in the second round. The fans booed that second round "effort." Very competitive third round and Magalhaes nearly ended it before the final bell. He scored the victory anyways.
FIGHT SIX: Andre Galvao def. Jorge "Macaco" Patino at 2:45 of the third round via strikes - Not a popular decision. After a three-minute feeling-out process in the first round, Galvao was rocked with right hands. He was blown up and out on his feet at the end of the round, barely hanging on. In the second round, he came out throwing desperation right hands, which Patino easily avoided. Somehow, Galvao gained control in the middle of the second round and slowed down the pace to extend the fight to the third round. Even after two rounds. Galvao then did the same in the third round - used his size to take control, then methodically wore down Patino until the ref stopped the fight due to strikes. Patino should have capitalized on the first round domination, which cost him the fight.
FIGHT SEVEN: Daniel Cormier def. Jason Riley via TKO at 0:58. This was a battle of two big heavyweights and Cormier won it handily. 50 seconds in, Cormier landed a sick right hand blow to the face, putting Riley on the mat. Cormier landed right hand after right hand; the ref was slow to put a stop to it, so Riley tapped out, giving Cormier a decisive win.

UFC NEWS: UFC 121 bringing Prelims Live special to Spike with McGee vs. Jensen, Cote vs. Lawlor
Spike TV today confirmed that the October UFC 121 event will feature an hour long Spike TV Prelims Live special, and the two fights set for the special have been revealed.
Ultimate Fighter season 11 winner Court McGee will take on Ryan Jensen, and former UFC Middleweight Title challenger Patrick Cote will meet "Filthy" Tom Lawlor on the hour long broadcast.
The event takes place October 23 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., and the event is headlined by a UFC Heavyweight Championship bout between Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez.
Jensen heads into his fight with McGee looking to build momentum after his UFC 114 submission victory over Jesse Forbes. He had gone 1-2 in his previous three fights heading into that one.
McGee won the 11th season of The Ultimate Fighter in June, submitting Kris McCray to take the title and the "six figure contract." He has lost just once in his career, to longtime veteran Jeremy Horn in 2007.
Cote returned from a year and a half injury layoff in May, though he was defeated by Alan Belcher at UFC 113 to give him two straight losses. Lawlor was defeated on that same card for his second straight loss as well, as he was submitted by Joe Doerksen. Both fighters will be in desperate need of a win on this card.
Penick's Analysis: With how stacked this card is, a Spike TV special for it was a foregone conclusion. There are just a ton of really good fights, and this allows for fans to see even more of them guaranteed, and leaves a good possibility that a couple of the unaired preliminary card fights will make the broadcast if time is available. Both of these fights should be entertaining, and it should make for a good lead in to the pay-per-view broadcast.
BELLATOR NEWS: Rory Markham not cleared to fight, Tyler Stinson in against Steve Carl at Bellator 26
UFC veteran Rory Markham has not been medically cleared to fight this Thursday at Bellator 26 from the Kansas City Power & Light District, and season two open tryout winner Tyler Stinson is stepping into his spot against Steve Carl on the card.
The organization announced the change on Tuesday.
Tyler stepped in on late notice for an injured Sean Pierson in season two to take on Dan Hornbuckle. That bout served as a quarterfinal matchup in the season two welterweight tournament, a fight Hornbuckle won.
"Tyler?s skills and development as a fighter have consistently impressed me. He was preparing for a qualifier scheduled a month from now, but Tyler is always in fighting shape and was totally prepared to take this fight,? said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney in today's release. ?Both of these guys have put on great fights for us and I expect nothing different on Thursday night."
Carl also suffered a loss to Hornbuckle during Bellator's second season, losing in the semifinals to snap a seven fight win streak.
The bout will take place at a catchweight of 175 lb., and will be a qualifier for the season four welterweight tournament.
Penick's Analysis: This is a good opportunity for Stinson. Coming in on such short notice isn't beneficial to either fighter, but for Stinson he's got a chance to get back to the tournament in season four, except he'll actually be able to prepare for it this time. MMAJunkie.com reported that Markham was not cleared due to a lung issue. He said after UFC 95 that he fought with a collapsed lung, and it could have been residual effects from that. Hopefully he's alright.

Zoila Frausto Corrected Own Mindset After Loss to Miesha Tate
Zoila Frausto is two wins away from the Bellator 115-pound belt and probably wouldn't be in her current position had it not been for a loss to Miesha Tate.
"I can't win every fight on just standing alone," Frausto recently told MMAFighting.com. "I had no ground game, no wrestling up until [the Tate] fight. I was to the point where I thought if they can't take me down, then why even work on the ground, but it was the wrong mindset. She kind of pretty much just put me in my place, and I've become an all-around fighter and I'm happy with it."

Horwich pulls upset on Leites at 'War on the Mainland'
keep coming back better and evolving mentally, physically and spiritually. This is the biggest win of my life."In a sport filled with wacky characters, Horwich (pictured on the right) may be the most unique. He's speaks of his religious faith often and says that he's into quantum physics. How did he learn such a complicated subject? On the internet, of course. "It's a beautiful multiverse," said Horwich, who is fighting's version of Crispin Glover/George McFly. "It's another
day surfing the infinitely accelerated current of creativity. Thank god for
everything."It was the first time anyone had submitted Leites in 21 pro fights.
Horwich (24-13-1) also got his career back on track. He had been on the
wrong end of five decisions in his last six fights. That said, the win was far from a fluke. If you play Horwich's game, you're in for a rough night. Leites, a ground specialist, was having his way on the feet but for some reason chose to pull guard on several occasions. Those situations and even the ones where Leites had top control wore on him. In the third round, Horwich showed how tough he was when he refused to tap during a 55 second stint caught in an arm-triangle choke. Rutten pointed out that Leites may be in trouble if didn't finish the fight, pointing to lactic acid build up in Leites' arms. Lopez wins light heavyweight title with big knees Tony Lopez has been a big hit on the smaller fight circuit but he's never gotten a chance at high level fighters. As a late replacement, he did tonight and took out former UFC fighter Jason Lambert. Lopez, using a big six inch height advantage, landed a huge left knee to change the fight. Lambert hit the deck, got smashed by two more punches and Lopez walked away as his opponent was face down in the ropes. Lopez (19-4) picks up the PWP light heavyweight title at 1:49 of round two. The 6-foot-4 Lopez was called in this week and had to lose 26 pounds to make the 205 limit. The guy doesn't look pretty but he's now won 17-of-19 fights.

Strikeforce Houston weigh-in: Shredded Kennedy could be on verge of big things
has put together another dynamite card tomorrow night on Showtime. The
televised portion of the event is filled with some of the best young
fighters in the game. Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal is already regarded as a
top 10 light heavyweight and he's six professional fights into his
career. Lawal defends his title against the very dangerous Rafael
"Feijao" Cavalcante. Another great wrestler, Tim Kennedy gets his shot
at stardom in a middleweight title fight against world champion jiu-tisu
ace Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza. Kennedy, 30, had a little delay in arriving
at this level. As a member of the Army's Special Forces he was away
from fighting for most of 2004-2006. A winner of four straight fights
(all finishes), Kennedy is ready to make up for lost time. "No
one has really gotten to see everything that I have to offer yet.
Combined my (Showtime) fighting time is like nine minutes or something,"
Kennedy (12-2) told Heavy.com. "All three of (my Strikeforce) fights
were very similar. All three of those guys were weak off their back.
Now a guy like Jacare, who is actually dangerous (off his back), I’m
going to
knock him out because I know he can’t take me down."Jacare (12-2) has only been stopped twice in his career. Kennedy says Souza has a few weaknesses he can exploit. "He’s a juggernaut when he’s got top position, and he’s
not terrible at anything, but his stand-up’s not great," said Kennedy. "His clinch isn’t great.
His wrestling is good, but it’s not great. I think he’s soft when he’s on his back,"It's
also a big night for Bobby Lashley. The former WWE star needs a win
over Chad Griggs and then there are some big fights on the horizon.

STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS 10 RESULTS: Ryan Couture, son of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, impresses in his professional debut
Ryan Couture, the 27 year old son of UFC Hall of Famer and UFC 118 co-main event fighter Randy "The Natural" Couture, made his professional debut on Friday night at Strikeforce: Challengers 10 on Showtime, and he made the most of the exposure.
In a quick fight, Couture pulled off a nice takedown, got taken down himself and then quickly slapped on a tight triangle choke submission to force Lucas Stark to tap.
The fight, which came in the middle of the night's card from the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, Ariz., was one of only two fights on the main card that were full length bouts due to the women's tournament.
Couture will now look to make a name for himself after making the jump to the professional ranks after a number of amateur bouts.
Penick's Analysis: Of course, this fight only got on TV because of his last name, but he provided an exciting short fight and picked up a good submission win in his debut. As long as he can take advantage of the doors that will be open to him because of who his father is he can still distance himself from that. If he can start rattling off more wins and if he can look impressive doing so, eventually the talk will turn to being just about him.

Tim Sylvia KOs Paul Buentello for Biggest Win in Years
In the first round Sylvia was getting the better of the punching exchanges and forcing Buentello into corners, where Buentello would tie Sylvia up. Buentello's tendency to hold onto Sylvia led referee Big John McCarthy to separate the fighters on three different occasions in the first round, a round that Sylvia definitely won. Strikeforce welterweight Jay Hieron not a free agent just yet
Early Saturday morning, Hieron stated he had "finally got my release from [Strikeforce]," which prompted speculation of a potential move to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
But following Saturday's Showtime-televised "Strikeforce: Houston" event in Texas, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told MMAjunkie.com that's not exactly the case.

UFC NEWS: UFC signs German welterweight Pascal Krauss, debuts at UFC 122 in Germany
The UFC is returning to Germany this November, and they're adding more German fighters to their roster as a result. The latest addition is welterweight Pascal Krauss, who will be making his debut on the UFC 122 card, according to German website GroundAndPound.de.
Krauss, undefeated at 9-0, will take part in the night's card, coming November 13 from the Konig Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, Germany.
He was last in action in May, earning a submission win over John Quinn. He has stopped all nine of his fights by TKO or submission, and has not reached a third round in any of his fights.
Countrymen Dennis Siver and Peter Sobotta are expected to join Krauss on the card in their home country. The event will air in the U.S. via tape delay on Spike TV.
Link to initial report
Penick's Analysis: Krauss looks like a definite standout from Germany here with an impressive record over his two and a half year career. He's finished fights with a variety of submissions, and the fact that he hasn't hit the third round in a fight yet is an impressive feat. He has gone late into the second a couple of times, however, so he's got some stamina in him. He'll likely get a boost in competition on this card depending on who he gets matched up against.

Mac Danzig's Injury Forces More Changes to UFC Fight Night 22
Due to a chest injury suffered in training, TUF 6 winner Mac Danzig has withdrawn from his co-headlining rematch against Matt Wiman at UFC Fight Night 22 (September 15th, Austin). Danzig and Wiman previously met at UFC 115 in June, with Danzig losing by a controversial first-round technical decision; the referee stopped the fight due to a guillotine choke despite the fact that Danzig didn't tap and wasn't out, leading to an unfortunate "WTFIYP?" moment in the cage. It was Danzig's fourth loss in his last five fights, and he'll now have to wait a little longer to redeem himself.
Stepping up against Wiman at the Austin event will be TUF 8 lightweight winner Efrain Escudero, who's coming off his unanimous decision victory over Dan Lauzon at UFC 114, and was originally supposed to face John Gunderson on the prelims. Now, Gunderson is expected to face returning UFC vet Yves Edwards (38-16-1, 6-4 UFC), who hasn't competed in the Octagon since his TKO loss to Joe Stevenson at UFC 61. Since then, he's made appearances in Bodog Fight, EliteXC, Strikeforce, and Shine Fights, and most recently scored a decision over Luis Palomino at last week's Bellator event.

UFC QUOTABLES: B.J. Penn says he's going to knock out or submit Frankie Edgar at UFC 118
"If anyone thinks I'm in Hilo sitting on my ass, they're crazy. They don't have much to work with, they've only got Frankie Edgar. I'm not afraid to exchange with him in any way [but] I don't think he wants to exchange with me...
He's going to be running around. He's just going to try and jazz up what he did last time. A little quicker, a little better, maybe throw a kick. He can run around all he wants, sooner or later he's going to have to step up to me and he's going to have to do something and when that happens, that's going to be the time...
I'm going to knock him out or submit him or slam him on his head and have him get knocked out from that. I'm all about finishing my guy and I cannot wait to finish him. After it's done I want him to look at me and think 'That's what it's like to fight B.J. Penn, that's what it's like to fight the world champion.'"
-B.J. Penn discusses how he sees his UFC 118 main event fight with Frankie Edgar going down in a pre fight hype video from the UFC (transcribed by Nick Thomas at BloodyElbow.com)
Penick's Analysis: We haven't heard a whole lot from B.J. since the loss to Edgar in April, as he's stayed surprisingly low key over the summer. I think he's been getting himself fully prepared for this rematch in that time, and now it's time to get into the hype. There was something off about Penn in the April fight compared to his last couple of title defenses, and if he gets himself back to the mindset he was in during those defenses I think he'll end up regaining that Lightweight Championship. I thought he won the first fight even while looking a bit off of his game, and I think he'll take this rematch.

UFC 117 NEWS: Early pay-per-view buy estimates trending towards 1 million for Silva vs. Sonnen event
Chael Sonnen's solo build up to his UFC 117 fight with Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight Championship proved to be a massive success for the UFC.
Following up on UFC 116's pay-per-view success - the Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin headlining fight drew around 1.1 million buys - early estimates for UFC 117 have it coming in near a million itself.
Those early estimates were first reported by Bryan Alvarez at F4WOnline.com, and would bring this event just under May's UFC 114 card with the Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson main event.
If the numbers wind up falling anywhere near that number it will be considered a hugely successful event. It will be the biggest buyrate an Anderson Silva headlining event will have garnered, and continues the trend of success for events that follow a Lesnar headlined card.
Link to www.F4WOnline.com report (subscription required)
Penick's Analysis: This is a remarkable number for this card. I was expecting Sonnen's pre-fight talking to boost the buyrate slightly, but with what had happened in Silva's previous fights, to consider this a reachable number heading in would have been crazy. It's a testament to how well Sonnen was able to gain interest in fans for this fight, and he deserves a bonus from the UFC for his efforts. The other great part about this is the fact that so many people go to see this fight. It was one of the single best fights I've ever seen, and perhaps the greatest title fight in UFC history. Having that type of historical bout be such a success is an even greater mark in the UFC's favor right now. This unprecedented string of business for the organization is incredible.
