STRIKEFORCE NEWS: "Mayhem" Miller insists Nick Diaz is ducking him, Cesar Gracie camp responds with statement

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoStrikeforce2010_105_38.png
The continued verbal spat between Jason "Mayhem" Miller and the Cesar Gracie camp - regarding a potential bout between Miller and Nick Diaz in Strikeforce - is escalating, as both sides have attacked the other once again this week.

This week's opening salvo came when Miller appeared on "It's Time! With Bruce Buffer" on the Sherdog Radio Network and ripped into the reasoning the Gracie camp has given for not taking a fight at middleweight.

"They've started spitting out, 'Oh, 178.' Meanwhile back at the ranch, Nick Diaz is saying, 'I'll fight middleweight. I'll fight middleweight.' OK, well, just not against me, right? That's how it is. He's bologna, this guy. These guys don't want to fight me. He doesn't want to fight me, so now he's like making it, 'Oh, Mayhem turned down the fight.' I didn't turn down a fight. I never got offered a fight."

"We've got an outstanding beef," Miller continued. "They trumped up this beef with him and K.J. Noons -- it was a 4-year-old beef. Man, Tito Ortiz was smashing Ken Shamrock back in the days they had that beef. This beef is brand-spanking-new. Let's do it now. Let's do it now. Stockton is a bunch of sissies. I'm at the table. I'm at the table with a plate of yams, sitting there ready to spank his ass, but he doesn't want to come to the table. He wants to sit in his bedroom with Cesar Gracie and cuddle."

In response to these latest statements, the Gracie camp issued a lengthy response at GracieFighter.com. That statement is below:

"As Jason Miller's rantings become more intense and pathetic, we found it important to refute his incoherent diatribe with reasoning that any child or even Jason Miller himself could understand.

Miller is now demanding a fight with Nick Diaz based on several reasons, none of which include the most fundamental of factors; actually earning a shot at the Champ by working your way up as a viable contender.

Miller has already lost to the only Team Graciefighter he has ever faced; Jake Shields. After the lopsided defeat, Miller was less than gracious, prompting Shields to respond,
'I'm on to bigger & better fights like always. I mean ur last real win was when you beat up your girlfriend and got arrested.'

Jake Shields then went on to defeat highly touted Dan Henderson. Henderson had routinely used Miller as a human mop to clean the mats with at Team Quest in Temecula, California.

After Shields' victory, Miller decided to demand a rematch he had no chance of ever earning. (sound familiar)

This time Miller was foolish enough to interrupt Shields on national television after the greatest win of his career.

Miller subsequently received a deserved thumping from some of Jake's team mates which even UFC President, Dana White, commenting on Miller stated, 'you've got this f^*@ing goofball running in saying 'Hey where's my rematch?', well what did you think was going to happen?'

Miller went on to use the post fight "jumping" as the basis for a match with Nick Diaz. Our camp offered Miller a fight at any weight behind closed doors with Diaz if Miller was not able to move on from his issues with him. Miller has instead crusaded for a payday fight. Publicity stunt?

Nick Diaz being the 170lbs Strikeforce Champion will fight anyone the organization puts in front of him. This includes Jason Miller. Miller has declined to make the 170lbs weight limit he has previously fought in.

Jason Miller has asked Nick Diaz to fight at a "catch-weight". Miller stated he would fight at the same catch-weight that Diaz had previously fought in. Strikeforce approached our camp with Miller's request and we accepted the same weight as Diaz's last catch-weight, 178 + a 1 pound allowance for 179lbs. Diaz has never fought over 180lbs. Miller then changed his mind and declined.

Now wanting the fight at 183lbs (184 with a 1 pound allowance), Miller told anyone that would listen that 'Diaz had fought on several occasions at 183lbs.'

Hoping that if he lied enough people would actually beleive him, Miller continues to lie.

Lastly, a desperate Jason Miller has pulled up an interview where Nick Diaz stated that besides 170lbs, he would be also interested in fighting at 155lbs, and 185lbs sometime in the future. Citing this, Miller has become manic in his insistance that Diaz is ducking him.

We wonder if Jorge Gurgel will next cite the same interview as a demand Diaz drops down to 155lbs immediately for a fight or he will also be ducking him?

As the Strikeforce Champion, Nick Diaz will fight at other weight classes, but only against relevant contenders and champions not irrelevant non-contenders.

When Dana White talks of GSP fighting at middle weight, he means against the Anderson Silva's of the world not the Mayhem Millers. If Miller ever signs with the UFC we would truly like to see Dana's reaction when the man he refers to as 'that F^@*ing goofball' calls out their Welterweight Champ to fight him, a non-contender at middleweight.

Good luck Miller."

Of course, both sides are likely wasting a lot of energy on one another when they can't come to an agreement on a weight to fight at, and Diaz will be moving on for a bout in January against someone other than Miller.

Penick's Analysis: One of the problems with this scenario is the fact that Miller would mark one of the more legitimate challenges out there for Diaz, despite the loss to Jake Shields. Diaz, while he's done nothing but win fights over the last four years and remains a supremely talented fighter, hasn't faced any top ten competition in that time span. Miller, while he's not near a top ten middleweight at this point, isn't much different in terms of level of opponent than anyone else he's going to face off against in the coming year. But right now, if the fight isn't going to happen they should both probably just move on.

UFC 124 video: White talks UFC 131 and McCorkle's wedding

There was a ton of media coverage at Thursday's UFC 124 prefight press conference. Heavy.com's Megan Olivi grabbed Dana White to find out what the plans were for UFC 131 in Ontario. White said he's making sure the integrity of the event won't be compromised for ticket buyers.

The interview had its lighter moments. At 2:18, he jokes about Sean McCorkle.

Apparently, "Big Sexy" turned on the charm during an earlier interview with Heavy.

Anthony Pettis' Striking Coach Duke Roufus Talks About 'Showtime Kick'

It was the Kick Heard 'Round the World, a climbing, twisting, off-the-cage, out-of-the-video-games-and-into-Ben-Henderson's-face, mind-scrambler of a strike in the 25th and final minute of a WEC championship match that shot Anthony Pettis into the consciousness of sports fans everywhere.

While his aim is to stay there for more than just one night, it's safe to say that regardless of his future, the 23-year-old cemented himself a place in MMA history by authoring one of the sport's most incredible moments.

According to his striking coach, kickboxing great Duke Roufus, it was no accident. Roufus told MMA Fighting that it's a kick that was conceived a few years ago and practiced weekly by Pettis during training camp.

Cerrone punches his ticket to the UFC with win over Horodecki

Donald Cerrone has been one of the mainstays in the WEC, but with the merger of the promotion into the UFC, nothing was guaranteed. Cerrone was likely to get the invite to the big promotion but certainly didn't have room to jerk around and lose to Chris Horodecki.

He didn't. Early in the second round, Cerrone hit the deck and transitioned to a triangle choke. The veteran stayed patient with Horodecki and eventually locked on the submission hold where it was unbearable for the 23-year-old to continue at 2:43 of the second round.

Cerrone will now go from being a big fish in a little pond to a small fish in the biggest MMA pond in the sport. The 155-pound division in the UFC is extremely deep. The lanky lightweight should provide some great matchup opportunities for UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.

"The Cowboy" called out Cole Miller following the fight. Miller has a win over Cerrone's teammate Leonard Garcia.

Horodecki was very much in the fight in the first round. In spite of giving away a lot in the reach department, Horodecki was having success getting inside and landing combinations to the head and body. There were several trips to the floor, and Cerrone looked like the slicker fighter in the grappling department. Cerrone won the first round, but it was competitive.

For some reason between rounds, Horodecki's trainer Shawn Tompkins asked the fighter to grapple and get it to the ground in the second.

Horodecki listened and got it down but was almost immediately in danger, in the grips of Cerrone's long legs.

Cerrone (13-3, 6-3 WEC) moves over to UFC with the potential of being a Chris Lytle-type. The MMA veteran has won seven postfight honors during his time with UFC.

Cerrone, 27, has the same exciting, go-for-broke approach, that'll make him a big hit with his new fans over in the UFC.

Horodecki (16-3, 2-2 UFC) may have cost himself a gig with the UFC. That said, he's a young dude who probably deserves at least one more fight with Zuffa.

Eddie Wineland Credits Composure for Four-Fight Streak

Eddie WinelandGLENDALE, Ariz. - Eddie Wineland downplayed it, but it would be hard to argue against saying he's experiencing a career transformation.

The Indiana-based fighter, who lives and trains in the shadow of Chicago while holding down a full-time gig as a firefighter is not that far removed from grinding out wins in local promotions just to get back to the WEC. But suddenly, and seemingly under many people's radars, the first bantamweight champion in WEC history is on a four-fight winning streak.

'Mayhem' Miller continues his 'Don't be scared, homey' campaign

Jason "Mayhem" Miller really wants to fight Nick Diaz. He wants the bout so much that he's started a website devoted to the cause and has endorsed this video to help get the bout. (Warning: NSFW for language and multiple middle fingers.)

These two can't stand each other, going back to April, when Miller jumped in the cage after Diaz's teammate, Jake Shields, won the Strikeforce middleweight belt. A melee ensued, and the two also reportedly almost came to blows after Diaz's June bout with K.J. Noons.

What's the hold-up? Weight. Diaz is Strikeforce's welterweight champ, but has fought at higher catchweights. Miller is a middleweight. The lowest he will go is 183 lbs., while the highest Diaz will go is 178 lbs.

Miller can make all the videos and websites in the world, but until the two can get past a five-pound difference, the fight's not going to happen.

Video: Aleksander Emelianenko's Three-Year Can-Crushing Streak Comes to a Bitter End

(Props: 187872 via MMAScraps. Fight starts at the one-minute mark.)

Aleksander Emelianenko was back in action Saturday night in Khabarovsk, Russia, where he faced Australian K-1/Sengoku vet Peter Graham in the main event of Draka: Governor's Cup 2010. Despite Graham's decorated kickboxing background, he came into the fight with an underwhelming MMA record of 3-5, with notable losses to Kazuyuki Fujita, Rolles Gracie, and Jim York (all by first-round choke).

But this was no ordinary MMA match — special rules were in place so that fighters would be stood up after just 30 seconds. Not that it would matter to Aleks, who hasn't needed much more than his fists lately. In fact, The Other Emelianenko had finished all of his previous eight opponents in the first round. True, most of those opponents were no-name punching bags who looked like they didn't belong in the ring with him, and his April win against Eddy Bengtsson was one of the dive-iest dives in diving history. Would Graham be another conquest on Alek's can-crushing streak? As the headline of this post should have already informed you, no, not at all.

UFC 124 weigh-in: GSP talks tough and Alves makes weight

A tough talking Georges St. Pierre, a smirking Josh Koscheck, a svelte Thiago Alves, a skeleton-like Dustin Hazelett and three guys with mop tops all highlighted the festivities in Montreal at the UFC 124 weigh-in

GSP was fired up as he ran onto the platform at the Bell Centre.  The UFC welterweight champ has been waiting for months to finally get his hands on Koscheck, who busted his chops at every turn during the taping of Season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter."

St. Pierre doesn't talk much trash, but he was in the mood on Friday afternoon.

"Tomorrow, I guarantee you the bully will get bullied. I'm motivated, but I'm going to fight smart," St. Pierre told UFC color analyst Joe Rogan. "He tried to put me off track. That's what he wanted. I'm not going to do it. I'm gonna kick his ass tomorrow. I look for the knockout."

The pro-GSP crowd was in full approval. A few minutes earlier, before Koscheck hit the scale, the UFC wisely fanned the flames with the crowd by playing a clip from TUF 12. It's was a short highlight of Koscheck saying he didn't want to lose to GSP, especially because he was a French guy.

"Thanks for the great welcome," Koscheck said with a big smile on his face (4:07 mark). I plan on putting on a helluva show tomorrow night. The talk is over. Georges know he's gotta represent all you guys out here booing."

The booing got louder as the Canadians on hand treated Koscheck, like he was a defenseman for the Boston Bruins.

"I'll see you tomorrow night when I put Georges St. Pierre to sleep," said Koscheck.

Thiago Alves, joined by his nutritionist, Mike Dolce, looked great on the scale. The bulky welterweight had missed weight in two of his previous four fights. At 171 pounds, Alves didn't look gaunt, or worn in the face.

With their shaggy hair, Mac Danzig and Matt Riddle looked like Beatles wannabes from the 60's. Coincidentally, the clown prince of the Internet, Sean McCorkle, was wearing a wig that looked similar to the haircuts of Danzig and Riddle.

McCorkle has done a nice job of transforming his 6-foot-7 body. He was under the heavyweight limit at 264. Keep in mind, he used to fight at well over 300 pounds. That said, he was no Hazelett. At 6-foot-1, the former welterweight looked incredibly skinny down at 155.

UFC 124 Results: Jim Miller Submits Charles Oliveira

by Michael David Smith
Jim Miller has shown once again that he's one of the best lightweights in mixed martial arts, and Charles Oliveira has suffered the first loss of his career, after the two fought an exciting, back-and-forth couple of minutes before Miller submitted Oliveira in the first round at UFC 124.

Miller took Oliveira to the ground early in the first round and stayed on top of him, but Oliveira was very active with strikes and submission attempts from the bottom. But when Oliveira went for Miller's leg, Miller reversed it with a knee bar, forcing Oliveira to tap at the 1:59 mark of the first round.

"Charles is a tough kid with a ton of potential, but I'm one of the best in the world," Miller said afterward.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Olympian Rhadi Ferguson to make Strikeforce debut at Strikeforce Challengers 13

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoStrikeforce2010_105_42.png
Daniel Cormier won't be the only former Olympian fighting on the Strikeforce Challengers 13 card on January 7, as Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com reports that Rhadi Ferguson, member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Judo Team, will meet Ion Cherdivara on the card.

Ferguson, cousin of former EliteXC and UFC heavyweight Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson, is 2-0 in MMA as a light heavyweight and will make his Strikeforce debut in this bout. He was a four time national champion in judo in addition to being an alternate on the 2000 Olympic team.

Strikeforce Challengers 13 takes place from Nashville, Tenn., headlined by a welterweight bout between Tarec Saffiedine and Tyron Woodley. The event will air on live on Showtime.

Penick's Analysis: Ferguson is already 35 years old, but as a highly accomplished judo player making his way into the sport he's got a great background to have some success. How he translates his judo skills into an all around game at this point is an intriguing story, and for the Challengers series this should be a good prospect fight.

Sonnen-Wandy TUF 13 rumors heating up

The UFC has stones. Dana White takes most criticism head on and the promotion often embraces controversy to further its brand.

Using sideshows like Kimbo Slice and James Toney to sell pay-per-views is one thing, now the UFC sounds like it's ready to take on one of the biggest hot-button issues in sports, steroids.

Rumors have it that highly controversial, currently suspended fighter Chael Sonnen may be the next volatile personality "The Ultimate Fighter" is built around.

Sonnen, who tested positive for an unusually high testosterone count at UFC 117, was cleared by the California State Athletic Commission last week. The CSAC accepted his testosterone replacement therapy excuse and knocked his suspension down to six months.

In the court of public, he's far from cleared.

Anytime a fighter is linked to the word "steroids," there's skepticism.

It looks like the UFC isn't going to shy away from Sonnen. If the Wanderlei Silva vs. Sonnen TUF comes together, it could be the first time in sports' history that guy labeled as a cheater is put at the center of the sport's marketing plan.

Don't believe it's going to happen? Cage Potato tracks the recent banter between Wanderlei Silva and Sonnen on Twitter. It looks like the seed is being planted. Silva feels like Sonnen is disrespectful towards Brazilians.

Here's what Chael Tweeted the day after his CSAC hearing:

"Wand, you might as well fill out your own toe tag. Where is says "Cause of death," just write, "I pissed off a Gangster."

And here is Silva's reply:

"Sonnan you start tolk about me, becarful or you go need call to your dentista"

Chael responded with:

"All broken pieces of Wand will be half off on Greenlightdaily.com. Where ya at little guy, worried that I'll understand you this time?"

And then Tweeted this today:

"Take your comebacks, write them down on a sheet of paper. Roll it up tight, soak it in water, freeze it overnight, then jam it up your ass."

Sonnen is a villain for many hardcore fans. His delivery and trash-talk will be huge with casual and non-MMA fans. Plus, Brazil is probably getting a UFC event in August of 2011. It sounds like a recipe for one of the best TUF's ever.

There's one problem. Is it all worth it or could the bad publicity coming from using a guy labeled as a cheater actually hurt the sport?

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Herschel Walker confirmed for January 29 show, no opponent named yet

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

WalkerHershel_MK150b_10.jpg
After a cut suffered in training forced him out of a December 4 bout with Scott Carson on Showtime, Herschel Walker will now make his return to the sport of MMA on January 29, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com.

Per the report, Scott Coker confirmed Walker's involvement during a radio appearance in San Jose, Calif.

With the 40 year old Carson not getting re-booked he remains a possibility as Walker's next opponent, though that has not yet been determined for the event, which will air live on Showtime from the HP Pavilion in San Jose.

The 48 year old Walker made his MMA debut for Strikeforce in January of this year, defeating Greg Nagy by TKO. A former Olympian, Heisman Trophy winner and longtime NFL running back, Walker will look to go 2-0 in this latest athletic endeavor on January 29.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: I still remain in the camp that doesn't like the fact that Walker's inclusion on a card means someone else gets slighted a televised spot. When they've had difficulties booking a lot of their fighters on a regular basis as it is, and there has been some dissension from those that want to be more active, giving a spot to a 48 year old former football player doesn't exactly help boost the morale of those not getting fights. Still, they'll attempt to use his inclusion on the card to boost up viewership for the event, and they'll hope to get some mainstream press much like they did with Walker's debut last January. However, they should expect diminishing returns on that investment because part of the intrigue last year was the fact that it was his first MMA bout ever. Now, it's been done, we've seen it, and no one will be expecting much different the second time around.

UFC 124 Post-fight press conference: Who's next for GSP?

-- For the first time, the UFC allowed the fans to vote for the Fight of the Night, and that $100,000 bonus was given to Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck by the fans. Mark Bocek and Jim Miller split the Submission of the Night bonus, each taking home an extra $50,000. Bocek's was for a triangle choke of Dustin Hazelett, while Miller won his bonus for slapping a kneebar on Charles Oliveira. Mac Danzig was awarded the $100,000 Knockout of the Night bonus for his quick KO of Joe Stevenson.

-- Dana White said he believed it was the Pierson/Riddle fight should have won the fight of the night, and the UFC will take care of those fighters. He also said that the fans blew their chance by voting in GSP/Koscheck, so they won't get another chance to vote in FOTN. Later, White told GSP that he owed Pierson, his training partner, $100,000 dollars.

-- Montreal delivered again, with 23,152 fans packing into the Bell Centre, bringing in one of the largest North American gates ever of $4.58 million. This was the fourth UFC event in Montreal.

-- The biggest winner of the night may have been Mike Dolce, the man behind the Dolce Diet, for helping Thiago Alves move past his weight problems. Alves said that getting on the Dolce Diet was not just a change in his diet, but a change in lifestyle, and that made the difference in how he fought against John Howard.

-- When asked about a possible GSP-Anderson Silva super fight, White was non-committal, saying "We'll see what happens." GSP said that he needs to check it out, because if he were to move up, he needs to gain muscle and stay up at middleweight. He pointed out how the weight class movement affected the timing of Roy Jones, Jr., and he doesn't want to move back and forth between weight classes.

-- GSP seemed open to fighting Jake Shields. "I like watching him fight, he's very meticulous, he beat up everyone at 170 and 185, I think he's amazing," GSP said about Shields. "He's probably the number one contender right now for my title."

-- GSP spoke about his post-fight embrace with Koscheck, saying that Kos apologized and said the trash was to hype up a fight. GSP thanked him for coming and fighting in Montreal. "In the end, we need a good guy, we need a bad guy, and it's a business," GSP said.

-- Jim Miller is often not regarded as one of the UFC's best lightweights, despite the fact that's he only lost to Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, two men fighting for the lightweight title. He said it does bother him, because he believes he is the No. 3 guy.

"It does eat at me a little bit. It does bother me," he said. He hopes to get another chance at Edgar and Maynard. "I want revenge. I want to beat those guys. Even though Frankie and I are friends, it was fun when we fought the last time. It will be fun the second time."

UFC 124 Results: Thiago Alves Dominates John Howard

by Michael David SmithThiago Alves had his most impressive performance in the Octagon in years on Saturday night, putting on a striking clinic in dominating the overmatched John Howard to win the first fight on the UFC 124 pay-per-view card.

Alves hadn't won a fight since October of 2008, when he beat Josh Koscheck at UFC 90, but he's back in a big way now, and he showed in beating Howard that he's one of the Top 5 welterweights in all of mixed martial arts. All three judges scored the fight 30-27 for Alves, and none of the rounds were close.

"I'm really, really happy," Alves said afterward. "I worked really, really hard to get here today."

OTHER NEWS: Heavyweights Todd Duffee and Abe Wagner headlines Titan Fighting Championships 16 in January on HDNet

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

hdnet_logo_3.jpg
Heavyweight Todd Duffee was released from the UFC at the outset of the fall due to a combination of a loss to Mike Russow in May, pulling out of a fight at UFC 121 and reported attitude issues, but he's now ready to return to action.

Duffee will meet Ultimate Fighter 10 alum Abe Wagner at a Titan Fighting Championships in Kansas City on January 28. The event will air live on HDNet.

"MMA fans around the world know that HDNet is everyone's home for MMA," said Titan Fighting Championships President and CEO Joe Kelly in a press release for the bout. "We're excited that the Titan Fighting Championships will look to build a home of its own with HDNet and HDNet Fights starting on Jan. 28. Titan has worked with some of the best up and coming talent over the years and we are excited to continue that tradition with HDNet.

"Being able to feature Todd Duffee on our first televised event of 2011 is very exciting but I think fight fans will be surprised with some of the other names that have committed to this event. Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be announcing some very exciting matchups."

The event takes place at Kansas City's historic Memorial Hall, and tickets went on sale this morning.

Penick's Analysis: After turning down a last minute bout against Antonio Silva and turning down a reported contract with Bellator as well, Duffee may be looking to make his way back to the UFC by fighting in an event such as this. If he can pick up a win on a televised event but not be held under a restrictive contract as he may have faced in Strikeforce or Bellator, it will make it easier to get back into the UFC.

WEC 53 RESULTS: Anthony Pettis closes out WEC with spectacular win over Ben Henderson to capture WEC Lightweight Title, UFC Lightweight Title shot

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Anthony_Pettis_4.jpeg
The WEC has long been home to some of the most exciting fights and fighters in the sport of mixed martial arts, and on Thursday night the organization went out with a bang in the main event of WEC 53.

23 year old Anthony "Showtime" Pettis upended reigning Champion Ben Henderson by unanimous decision in one of the most exciting fights of 2010 to become the final WEC Lightweight Champion. With the win, Pettis will enter the UFC in 2011 in a fight for the UFC Lightweight Championship. He'll meet the winner of the title bout between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard at UFC 125 on New Year's Day.

The fight itself was a fantastic back and forth battle. Henderson started out well, winning a slightly tentative first round with a couple of takedowns. Pettis took the second with his striking and a submission attempt, but the fight really took off in the third round.

After a couple of early exchanges, Pettis pulled off a takedown of his own and quickly took Henderson's back. Henderson worked to his feet, but Pettis kept his position with a body triangle, and for the next three minutes he continued to threaten the choke while Henderson remained standing. He landed body punches and punches to the head from under Henderson's arm while his right wrist was controlled by the Champ, but threatened the submission when the arm was loose.

The fourth round was extremely even and extremely exciting as well. An early guillotine attempt from Pettis put him on his back, and as he tried to scramble Henderson took his back. He nearly finished the fight with a rear naked choke, but Pettis escaped, rolled over and wound up getting Henderson's back. When he couldn't lock on the submission himself, they worked back to their feet and traded kicks and punches for the rest of the round.

Then came the fifth round. Even heading in, Pettis began showcasing his superior striking skills in the round, landing a vicious flying knee early that rocked Henderson. Henderson wound up transitioning to a takedown and putting Pettis on his back, but after giving up his back, Pettis pulled off a beautiful spin to reverse and get into Henderson's guard and then stood back up. After lighting Henderson up with a couple of punches, the kick came.

With Henderson circling the cage, Pettis ran to the cage wall, leapt off his feet, spring-boarded off the cage and landed a kick to the face of Henderson that sent him to the ground. Somehow, Henderson was able to survive the incredible kick, and Pettis landed elbows and strikes on the ground as Henderson tried to hold onto a leg. As Henderson finally made his way to his feet, Pettis unleashed another flying knee as the round came to a close to seal the fight.

With scorecards of 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46, Pettis was awarded the WEC Championship, becoming the final WEC Champion ever and earning his shot at the UFC Lightweight Champion.

Penick's Analysis: It may be the proximity to the fight, but that was my favorite fight of 2010. Pettis' spring-board kick, which shall forever be known as the "Showtime kick," was the single most incredible move I've seen pulled off in an MMA fight. It was straight out of a movie, and it was simply amazing. At 23 years old, Pettis enters the UFC as one of the most exciting fighters on the roster. Whether he deserves it or not, he's getting the next title shot, and the UFC isn't going to have any issue touting him as the challenger with the highlight of that move. Fights against either Edgar or Maynard will be an incredible test, but I think a bout with Edgar especially has the potential to be an amazing fight and a very special event.

UFC NEWS: Full main card official for UFC 127 in Australia, Perosh vs. Blackledge added to preliminary card

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_662.jpg
The UFC held a press conference in Australia yesterday to officially announce a number of the bouts coming to February's UFC 127 event at the Acer Arena in Sydney.

In addition to the co-main event bouts in B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch and Michael Bisping vs. Jorge Rivera, the UFC announced that the main card will feature George Sotiropoulos vs. Dennis Siver, Kyle Noke vs. Chris Camozzi and Carlos Condit vs. Chris Lytle.

They also confirmed a preliminary card bout between James Te Huna and Alexander Gustafsson, as well as announcing a previously unreported bout between Anthony Perosh and Tom Blackledge.

Perosh stepped in on short notice this February to meet Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 110, losing in his third Octagon appearance and first since 2006. Blackledge is making his UFC debut, though he hasn't fought since 2009. He was supposed to debut at UFC 120 in October, but due to a number of injuries he eventually was pulled from the card.

UFC 127 will air live on pay-per-view in North America on Saturday, February 26, with the live event in Australia taking place on Sunday, February 27 due to the time delay.

Penick's Analysis: This is a very entertaining card on paper for Australia. The main card should have plenty of action, and the undercard will give a few fighters from overseas a chance to make an impression. I'm slightly surprised in them using Perosh again given his 0-3 mark in the UFC, but he's a local guy and took the Cro Cop fight on short notice so I'm sure that's the reasoning behind it. But all in all this should make for a good pay-per-view event.

Dominick Cruz Would Delay Surgery to Coach TUF vs. Urijah Faber

Dominick CruzGLENDALE, Ariz. - Now that he's the UFC bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz seems to already be settling into Company Man status - but he hopes a lingering hand injury can get fixed sooner rather than later.

After dominating Scott Jorgensen for a five-round unanimous decision on Thursday at the finale WEC event, WEC 53 at Jobing.com Arena outside Phoenix, Cruz (17-1, 7-1 WEC) said he'll know next week whether or not surgery on his hand will happen right away, putting him out for several months, or if it will be delayed.

"I work for the UFC now, and I pretty much do what I'm told," Cruz said at Thursday's post-fight press conference. "But at the same time, I've been going into these last two fights with a hand injury that needs to be addressed so that I can continue to fight at the level that I'm fighting - because it's something that's just going to get worse if I don't get it taken care of."

UFC NEWS: Josh Koscheck suffers broken orbital bone in UFC 124 loss to Georges St. Pierre

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

JoshKoscheck_150_37.jpg
Josh Koscheck's face was very visibly damaged after his five round fight with Georges St. Pierre on Saturday night, and ESPN's Josh Gross reports that Koscheck in fact broke his orbital bone in the first round of the fight.

After being released from a Montreal area hospital, Koscheck was unable to fly home to San Jose, Calif. due to an air pocket forming behind the break that made air travel dangerous. He and his trainer Bob Cook will drive to Boston where he will undergo surgery on the injury on Monday or Tuesday.

Said Cook: "We're going to have a much better sense of the injury when we get to the States. We'll get it checked down there. Hopefully he can have the surgery there and head home as soon as possible."

Koscheck lost a unanimous decision to St. Pierre in Montreal at UFC 124 on Saturday, with scores of 50-45 in favor of the Champion across the board.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: From a fan standpoint, it would have been very disappointing for the fight to have been stopped when the doctor was checking Koscheck's eye after the third round. However, it would have been a very legitimate stoppage, as Koscheck clearly took even more damage to a broken bone than was probably necessary, and it could have led to more severe damage. But it illustrates how much damage GSP was able to do simply with his jab in that fight, as well as how tough Koscheck was for fighting through it. Koscheck's toughness cannot be denied, and the fact that he didn't and wouldn't quit is commendable, but that's where doctors come in to protect fighters from themselves. With that, Joe Rogan shouldn't have railed against "Kris Kringle" checking on Koscheck like he did in between the third and fourth round, because with Koscheck being unable to see out of the eye, his ability to defend himself was severely compromised the rest of the fight.

UFC NEWS: Dana White confirms Jake Shields still getting next shot at GSP after Champ's UFC 124 victory

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

ShieldsJake2_150_1.png
Following Georges St. Pierre's victory over Josh Koscheck on Saturday night at UFC 124, discussion quickly turned to the possibility of a bout between GSP and reigning Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.

Not so fast, says UFC President Dana White.

White confirmed after the fight on Saturday that Jake Shields is still in line for the next shot at GSP. Shields defeated Martin Kampmann in his UFC debut at UFC 121 in October, and White stated then that he had earned a title shot with a win. He has stuck by that statement, and that fight will be next on the docket for both.

The fight could come to the UFC's first event in Toronto on April 30, as St. Pierre expressed an interest in taking part in the UFC 131 card from the Rogers Centre. However, no decisions have been made on the event with it several months off.

Penick's Analysis: St. Pierre vs. Shields is going to be a highly interesting tactical bout for the Welterweight Championship. Koscheck was able to take St. Pierre down once in the fight on Saturday, and Shields is assuredly going to do whatever possible to get St. Pierre to the ground. Whether he can close the distance and get past St. Pierre's striking game, it's no guarantee he can keep him on the ground if he gets him there. If it's the headliner of the Toronto card, it will once again be huge simply because of GSP's involvement.

St. Pierre shuts Koscheck's eye and big mouth at UFC 124

Georges St. Pierre is a true mixed martial artist. If you have a hole in your game, he'll exploit it.

The UFC's welterweight champ has wrestled in many of his recent victories. Tonight, when he faced a right-hand dominant wrestler, GSP went back to his boxing.

The French-Canadian rolled to unanimous decision victory, 50-45 on all cards, leaving the American looking grotesque after the main event at UFC 124 in Montreal.

St. Pierre (21-2, 16-2 UFC) hasn't lost a fight since 2007, winning 14-of-15. He successfully defended his UFC title belt for the fifth time. This was his second win over Koscheck (15-5, 13-5 UFC).

"My first fight with him, I wanted to beat him with the wrestling," St. Pierre said at the UFC 124 postfight press conference. "This fight I wanted to beat him with the boxing."

"I wanted to switch the strategy. Do something unexpected, so the opponent doesn't know what's coming at him. Mixed martial arts is like a chess game. You want to play strategy."

Using his spot as a coach on Season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter," Koscheck whipped Canadian and MMA fans into a frenzy in anticipation of the fight. He embraced the heel role by talking trash throughout the reality show, and during the lead up to the fight.

The super polite St. Pierre held his tongue until the last two days, when he finally said he was going to kick Koscheck's ass and never wanted to hear from him again.

At the end of the scrap, the fighter's embraced and spoke for a few seconds.

One would assume, Koscheck gave St. Pierre his due. When St. Pierre spoke with UFC analyst Joe Rogan in the Octagon, he asked the crowd to give Koscheck credit for his toughness. He also explained that Koscheck was only hyping up the fight with all the smack talk.

GSP set the tone early by using a piston-like jab. He landed 58-of-140 (40 percent) jabs.

"I don't know if I've ever seen someone take that much damage from a jab in the first round of a fight in MMA," said UFC president Dana White.

The approach was very reminiscent of how boxing heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko dominates his opponents. The fight also possessed a gross similarity to what Manny Pacquiao did to Antonio Margarito last month.

Margarito had his orbital bone broken by "Pac-Man" in the fourth round of that fight.

There's no official word, but it appeared that Koscheck suffered a similar injury in the first round. After just five minutes of fighting, Koscheck's right eye was almost completely shut.

St. Pierre tried for nine takedowns, but was only good on three. And in those cases, Koscheck got to his feet quickly. He may have been better off staying down.

With his vision clearly diminished, St. Pierre used his face as target practice. In rounds four and five, St. Pierre landed pretty much any left jab or hook he attempted. GSP outlanded Koscheck 21-1 in the fourth and by the end of the fight, the punch stats bordered on unbelievable for a fight that went the distance.

Koscheck got outlanded 136-30, and FightMetric counted significant strikes as 110 to 16 for St. Pierre. Compustrike said it was GSP 143-30 overall.

For UFC middleweight Maiquel Falcao, 2010 has been a rather interesting year.

Falcao looked impressive in spurts during a unanimous-decision win over Gerald Harris at UFC 123.

With the high of that UFC-debut win came the low of a recent detainment by Brazilian police. Now released by the authorities and back to training, Falcao told MMAjunkie.com he's anxious to put the entire episode behind.
